Welcome to Reflections, a personal blog where I share special interests and activities I like to explore in my free time. While some interests may seem unrelated to my work, I find that they have an impact on my positionality in and perspective on the world around me. I am the daughter of Black American parents, who have been married 50 years and counting! Raised in Louisiana, my parents migrated north to the Mid-Atlantic region, after stints in the Mid-Western and Southern states. Wherever we lived, they instilled responsibility, generosity, curiosity, and a strong work ethic in their children.
I took those attributes (and adventures) and pursued a variety of artistic and athletic activities early in life. After studying European classical music in college, I was starved for African American history and culture. I began to devour books on Black American figures and subjects in fiction, autobiographies, and memoirs, as I embarked on my career in the arts. Those were the days when an entire Saturday afternoon at the Lincoln Center Barnes & Noble was an escape from my cramped apartment without air conditioning and to different worlds created by Toni Morrison or Terry MacMillan.
These days I continue to pursue interests that range from boxing to sketching to sewing. My bookshelf still holds some of those early purchases but has expanded to historical fiction based in places like Ethiopia, Turkey, or the island of Molokai in Hawaii, as well as non-fiction books (and now podcasts) on human behavior. I’m a pretty even-tempered individual but when moved by new discoveries, I must share. And share I will! I hope you enjoy and thanks for stopping by!
